The Army of the Potomac was created after the defeat of Union forces at the First Battle of Bull Run. Its objective was to defend Washington, D.C. by protecting the Potomac River entry into the city. The Army of the Potomac participated in the Peninsula Campaign, the Seven Days' Battles, Antietam, Gettysburg and Appomatox. Union soldier; enlisted as a private in the 5th Vermont Volunteers, Company F on September 6, 1861 He survived the battles of Lee's Mills, Williamsburg, and Savage Station, and died of typhoid fever at Harrison's Landing, Virginia in the summer of 1862.
